Winter session almost washout; Speaker hopes for better show by members in New Year

New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) The Winter session of Parliament, which was almost a washout due to the disruptions over the demonetisation, today came to a close with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan expressing anguish over the loss of working hours but hoped that the coming sessions would be smooth and members will do some constructive debate and legislative work. Speaking before declaring the Lok Sabha adjourned sine die, Ms Mahajan urged the members to take a pledge in the new year that they would use only Parliamentary methods to express their dissent and differences to ensure that the House functioned smoothly. She noted with regret that because of disruptions in the Winter session, 91 hours and 59 minutes were lost which, she said, was not a good thing and had tarnished the image of the members in the public. Ms Mahajan, however, said some important Bills like the Taxation Laws (Second Amendment) Bill, 2016 and The Persons with Disability Bill, 2016 were passed by the House and 9 official Bills were introduced. She said though debate on 'Demonetisation of Currency Notes' was taken up in the House under rule 193, only partial discussion was possible. More UNI NY-NAZ AE 1523
