Will stop only when Guj, entire country is free of Gabbar Singh Tax: Rahul

Ahmedabad, Nov 11 (UNI) Continuing attack on the NDA Government on demonetisation and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said his party will stop only when Gujarat and the entire country is free of 'Gabbar Singh Tax' and the government gets the real GST in place.
Addressing a rally in Gandhinagar, Mr Gandhi said, "Gabbar Singh Tax is required neither by the government nor the entire country. Congress had told the BJP that a simple and good tax should be implemented but the latter rolled out GST at midnight without asking anyone. '
Claiming that the reduction in rates of GST on many items was due to the pressure from the people and the Congress, Mr Gandhi said the Congress would continue to fight till the real GST was put in place.
"We will stop only when Gujarat and the entire country is free of Gabbar Singh Tax and the government gets the real GST in place. We don't want five different tax slabs, but just one tax slab. Structural changes are required in GST. We don't want 28 per cent GST, but only 18 per cent. We will not stop till they do so. If they don't change, we will come and do the same," he said.
Later, addressing a rally at Sabarkantha in Gujarat, the Congress leader said the aim of the GST brought in force was to break the backbone of the country and strengthen the backbone of a selected few.
'The aim of GST is to break the backbone of India and strengthen the backbones of a selected few, 5-6 industrialists,' the Congress vice-president said.
Attacking the Modi government on its decision to demonetise currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination, he said, 'The government which can tell people at 8 in the night that it is going to demonetise currency within 4 hours, doesn't know what is in the hearts of people.'
Earlier, Mr Gandhi began the fourth phase of electioneering in Gujarat with a visit to the famous Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar. He will also go to the famous Ambaji Temple in Banaskantha on this tour.
