West Bengal skips Centre meet on Census, NPR

New Delhi, Jan 17 (UNI) West Bengal Government on Friday skipped the Centre’s meeting on upcoming Census 2021 and updation of the National Population Register (NPR).

All the Chief Secretaries of States and Administrators of Union Territories participated in the meeting held here at Ambedkar Bhawan.

The meeting, inaugurated by the Minister for State for Home Nityanad Rai, was convened to discuss the modalities for the house listing phase of the Census 2021 and the NPR which will be carried out from April 1 to September 30.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced on Wednesday that officials from the State will not attend the meeting. However, the Census Director of West Bengal, a central Government employee, attended the meeting.

Addressing the States representatives, Mr Rai laid emphasis on the need of conducting Census 2021 and the role of the States in doing the same and he also inaugurated the official mascot for Census 2021.

Speaking at occasion, Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla remaked on the vastness of this exercise and involvement of the state functionaries.

The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Dr Vivek Joshi made presentations on the appointment of the Census functionaries, National Population Register (NPR), printing and logistics facilities, use of Mobile application in data collection and central monitoring portal.
