We have zero tolerance for corruption, says Amazon on alleged bribing scandal

New Delhi, Sep 20 (UNI) Amid reports alleging that Amazon's lawyers bribed Indian officials, Delhi-based trade body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Monday demanded a CBI enquiry into the issue and also called for suspension of e-commerce portal pending investigation.
The CAIT in a letter to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that it is moving a representation to Gary Genseter, Chairman, US Securities & Exchange Commission and also to Corporate Governance Committee of Amazon Board demanding fair and independent probe into the issue.
“We have zero tolerance for corruption. We take allegations of improper actions seriously, investigate them fully, and take appropriate action. We are not commenting on specific allegations or the status of any investigation at this time,” Amazon spokesperson told UNI in response to the query on the controversy.
While demanding for the CBI probe, the CAIT said that it has to be determined if the alleged bribery has any connection with the ongoing investigation or related with continuous violation of the law and rules by Amazon.
"As the story relates to self admission of Amazon for bribing the government officials, the above steps are very much required to protect Indian e-commerce market and the retail trade from undue influence, abuse of dominance and connivance with government officials which falls under Anti-Corruption Act," the CAI said in a press note.
The allegation against Amazon has come at a time when the e-commerce giant is being investigated by Indian fair trade watchdog Competition Commission of India (CCI) for alleged violation of competition law and predatory pricing.
