Water seepage noticed at Jagannath Temple’s Meghanad Prachir

Puri, Dec. 14 (UNI) Chief Administrator of the Sri Jagannath Temple, Arabind Padhee, has drawn the attention of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to the seepage of water through the Meghnad Prachir of the 12th-century temple. It has been observed that water from the Anand Bazaar side of the temple has been percolating through the stone joints of the Prachir, raising concerns over the structure’s safety.
The ASI, which has been entrusted with the preservation, repair, and conservation of the 12th-century living temple since 1976, had carried out repair work on the Meghnad Prachir last year to arrest the seepage. The repairs included grouting and sealing of stone joints to prevent water infiltration.
However, several senior servitors and devotees pointed out that the ASI should have taken steps to prevent wastewater generated at Anand Bazaar—the Mahaprasad market located within the temple premises—from accumulating near the Prachir to permanently resolve the issue.
