Vishakhapatnam (North): TDP’s Ganta Srinivas Rao declared winner by margin of 1944 votes after result kept on hold

Vishakhapatnam, May 24 (UNI) The Election commission on Friday evening declared TDP Candidate and HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao as the winner from Visakhapatnam North Assembly seat after the result was put on hold in view of the differences in VVPATs slips and EVMs.

He won the seat by defeating his nearest rival YSR Congress party candidate Kammila Kannaparaju (KK RAJU) by margin of 1944 votes and wrested the seat from BJP.

The Election Commission of India cleared the objections raised by the YSRCP candidate on the differences of votes polled in one of the EVM and VvPATs slips.

The result of the north constituency was put on pending in view of the differences arises in VVPATs slips in 42 polling booth and the matter was referred to election commission of india for final decision.

After close scrutiny of the case by the Election Commission, it was decided that there will be no re-polling and the TDP candidate was declared the winner of the Vizag North seat by a majority of 1944 votes.

As per the results declared on the official website after ending of the counting process, indicated that TDP candidate secured 1944 votes majority against YSRCP candidate.

TDP secured 38.09 per cent (67,352) of the total votes polled while the his nearest rival YSRCP got 36.99 per cent of votes (65,408) and sitting BJP MLA candidate Penmetsa Vishnu Kumar Raju, who stood at third places, secured 10.63 per cent votes (18,720).

In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, Vishakhapatnam North, recorded a voter turnout of 62.65 per cent.

In the 2014 Andhra Pradesh state Assembly elections, Vishnu Kumar Raju of BJP won the Visakhapatnam North seat defeating YSRCP's candidate by a margin of 18,240 votes which was 11.41 per cent of the total votes polled.

Ganta began his career with the TDP and won from Anakapalle Lok Sabha constituency in 1999. In 2004, he was elected from Chodavaram Assembly constituency on the TDP ticket. In 2009, he fought the election successfully from Anakapalle Assembly constituency on the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) ticket.

By 2014, he was back in the TDP via the Congress, having become a Minister in the Congress Government.

Before the 2014 elections, he, along with ‘Avanthi’ Srinivasa Rao, Panchakarla Rameshbabu and UV Ramana Murthy Raju joined the TDP at a meeting addressed by Mr Naidu. Now Mr ‘Avanthi’ Srinivasa Rao and Mr Raju are in the YSRCP.

Meanwhile in Visakhapatnam, the YSRCP party secured 11 Assembly and 3 lok sabha constituencies while TDP won four assembly segments .

BJP which had four MLAs in the last Andhra Pradesh assembly and two MPs in 16th Lok Sabha, drew a blank in the 2019 elections.
