Visakhapatnam: CBI court convicts former central excise top official in bribe case

Visakhapatnam, Nov 12 (UNI) The first Additional Special Judge for CBI cases at Visakhapatnam on Tuesday convicted the former Central Excise Commissioner (port area) Surender Pal Singh for four years of rigorous imprisonment in a bribe case of 2005.
"SP Singh, IRS officer of 1973 batch was convicted under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and two years Rigorous Imprisonment under section 13(1)(d) read with 13(2) of PC Act with a total fine of Rs 20,000," CBI said in a statement.
In the case, SP Singh was found to have demanded bribe from the Managing Director of SML Dyetex and Industries Limited and Chairman of Vasavi Group of Industries.
He had taken Rs15 lakhs as bribe from M Kama Raju, the then vice president (finance) through his middlemen in connection with adjudication of evasion of Excise Duty by SML Dyetex and Manasa Industries Limited.
The middle men were acquitted in the instant case.
