Lucknow, Jul 11 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by a senior IAS officer, to probe the recent killing of eight policemen, who were allegedly ambushed by history-sheeter Vikas Dubey, when they were going to arrest him in Kanpur.
According to an official statement issued by the UP government here, the three-member SIT would be headed by Additional Chief Secretary, Sugarcane Development Sanjay R Bhusreddy, while it's other members would include ADG Hariram Sharma and DIG J Ravindra Gaur.
The SIT has been asked to submit it's report by July 31, it added.
However, the setting up of SIT was seen as a move by the UP government to scuttle the demand for a CBI probe into the policemen ambush and later Vikas Dubey's encounter, raised by opposition political leaders.
On the intervening night of July 2 and 3, eight Uttar Pradesh cops, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police and three Sub-Inspectors, were killed during a raid, conducted to arrest Dubey in Bikru village, near Kanpur city.
According to police, a team of about 20 policemen had gone to the village in Chaubeypur police station area, to arrest the gangster, who faced about 60 criminal cases, including murder and attempt to murder. At least seven other security personnel were injured in the attack, including a homeguard, who was reportedly critical.
Meanwhile, four entities, including three lawyers and an NGO, moved the Supreme Court on Saturday, seeking investigation into the criminal-politicians nexus and an SC-monitored probe into the alleged 'encounter' of Vikas Dubey, besides the killing of his associates.
