US demands Iran publicly declare Strait of Hormuz open after tanker attacks

Washington/Tehran, Jul 11 (UNI) The US has demanded that Iran publicly declare the Strait of Hormuz open to international shipping and pledge to stop targeting commercial vessels, following attacks on three tankers earlier this week that triggered a sharp military escalation between Washington and Tehran.
The demand comes after incidents in which three commercial ships were struck while transiting the strategic waterway, prompting a series of US strikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory attacks by Iran on US allies in the Gulf.
US President Donald Trump has since declared that the ceasefire between the two countries is effectively "over", but has said that attempts at a diplomatic breakthrough, much to his own scepticism, are ongoing. Iran, meanwhile, has accused Washington of violating the agreement.
