US commends Guatemala for its fight against corruption

Vienna, Austria, Nov 8 (UNI) The US has commended the efforts of the Government of Guatemala under President Morales to support the fight against corruption and impunity undertaken by the Attorney General.
"Anti-corruption efforts are essential to all our governments’ work to improve prosperity, enhance security, and promote good governance, and to our broader mission here in Vienna today," remarked James A Walsh, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
"We commend the efforts of the Government of Guatemala under President Morales to support the fight against corruption and impunity undertaken by the Attorney General. Anti-corruption efforts are essential to all our governments’ work to improve prosperity, enhance security, and promote good governance, and to our broader mission here in Vienna today, Walsh added, according to a Department of State press release on Tuesday.
The press release said the international community joined together, fourteen years back, to sign a transformational document: a global legal framework for preventing and combating corruption. Since 2005, States Parties have met seven times to improve how we implement the Convention, and today, we have much to show for it. Our frameworks, laws, and policies – and related international cooperation – are undoubtedly better today compared to 2005. However, our job is not finished.
"We remain committed to targeting ill-gotten gains. Through international cooperation and our Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, we have seized or frozen over $3 billion in corruption-related proceeds since 2010, having returned more than $150 million to date with another $30 million in process," it added.
