US apologizes for desecration of Mahatma Gandhi's statue

New Delhi, Jun 4 (UNI) US Ambassador to India Ken Juster on Thursday tendered an apology for an incident of desecration of Mahatma Gandhi's statue outside the Indian embassy in Washington.
"So sorry to see the desecration of the Gandhi statue in Wash, DC. Please accept our sincere apologies. Appalled as well by the horrific death of George Floyd & the awful violence & vandalism. We stand against prejudice & discrimination of any type. We will recover & be better", Juster said in a tweet.
According to reports, the incident took place when the ongoing protests in the US turned violent on the intervening night of June 2-3. Sources said that the desecration was carried out by some unruly elements in the mob.
US has been grappling with severe protests in response to the May 25 death of George Floyd -- an unarmed black man who died in police custody after a Minneapolis officer knelt on his neck on the street for more than eight minutes.
