Upper reaches receive fresh snowfall, rain lashes plains in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 9 (UNI) The upper reaches, including Apharwat mountain in the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and tourist resort of Sonmarg, received fresh snowfall, while light rain lashed Srinagar and other plains in Kashmir valley, resulting in a dip in the day temperature.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur at many places in Kashmir valley during the next 48 hours. "The night temperature improved at majority of the places in the valley due to overcast conditions," he added.

The upper reaches of Gulmarg, 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received fresh light snowfall on Tuesday, much to the delight of skiers and tourists, who were seen waiting in long queues to get their turn to ride Gandola cable car, despite rain in the main ski resort area.

“Khilanmarg and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project in Gulmarg, received fresh light snowfall since late last night while main Gulmarg received rain. But the dip in the day temperature, didn’t deter the tourists who were enjoying themselves,” a hotelier told UNI over the phone.

The night temperature in the ski resort dipped about a degree from Monday and settled at a degree, which is about 4 degree below normal.
Light to moderate rain lashed the summer capital, resulting in considerable dip in the day temperature.
The night temperature in Srinagar improved about 3 degree from Monday due to overcast conditions and settled at 9.3 degree, which is 2 degree above normal.

Rain lashed world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 from here in south Kashmir, since early this morning, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature though the mercury during the night improved due to cloudy skies.

However, the upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station for Amarnath cave shrine on traditional yatra route, received fresh light to moderate snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni also received fresh snowfall.

The mercury at Pahalgam improved and settled at 5.7 degree, against 3.3 degree recorded on Monday. The minimum temperature in the health resort was about 2 degree above normal.
Another health resort of Sonmarg on Srinagar-Leh national highway also received fresh snowfall since early late last night, resulting in chilly weather conditions. Baltal, base camp of Amarnath yatra from the shortest yatra route, also received fresh snowfall. Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, was closed due to slippery road conditions following snowfall.

Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and another tourist resort Kukernag also received rain since early this morning. The night temperature in these places also improved and settled at 8.8 degree, 7.4 degree and 7.3 degree, respectively.
