Unions call for nationwide strike in Myanmar as anti-coup campaign intensifies

Unions call for nationwide strike in Myanmar as anti-coup campaign intensifies

Nay Pyi Taw, Mar 8 (UNI) The biggest trade unions in Myanmar called for a nationwide strike on Monday and joined the anti-coup protest in an effort to pressurize the military leaders to step down and restore democracy in the country.
This latest call for the nationwide strike was given as two more protesters died from gunshot wounds to the head as security forces opened fire upon the protesters, Al Jazeera reported.
Photos shared on Facebook on Monday showed the bodies of two men lying on the street in the northern town of Myitkyina.
Witnesses said that they came out to protest after police fired stun grenades and tear gas which injured several people.
The latest killings came as shops, factories, and banks in the main city of Yangon closed, responding to a call by 18 labor organizations that urged workers “union and non-union alike” to stop work to reverse the February 1 coup and restore Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government to power.
