Unidentified gunmen shot dead Assam truck driver in Nagaland

Kohima, Sep 23 (UNI) While Naga peace talks were nearing to a solution, an incident of violation of human rights has shocked the Naga society, one Assam truck driver was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near Imliyanger Memorial Centre (IMC) Hall in Dimapur in the wee hours of Tuesday. Official sources said that the deceased, identified as Jiten Gogoi (30), hailed from Dhemaji in Assam and was a driver of a transport company. He had transported a shipment of sanitary ware and animal feed from Guwahati and was said to have crossed the Dillai check post in Assam at around 1:46 am, sources added. He was suspected that the killing happened sometime around 2:30 am of September 22. His body was found sprawled on the road near the warehouse at around 5:30 am.
Sources said his truck was found near the entrance to the warehouse and likely two shots were fired. A bullet mark was found on the side door. His body was found face down on the ground and was likely shot from behind, sources said. Two empty cases of .22 weapon caliber were recovered by the police from the site. While stating that the body was handed over to his family after post-mortem, the police said that investigation was on. Meanwhile, the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) stated that the perpetrators must be arrested and befitting punishment awarded and demanded justice for the bereaved family, while ensuring peaceful atmosphere to the denizens of Dimapur. Expressing grave concern that such a serious crime was committed in the heart of Dimapur town, NCD general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam in a statement, termed the incident as “gruesome and shocking.” He demanded that law enforcing bodies leave no stone un-turned in arresting the culprit at the earliest and awarded befitting punishment as per law, while also ensuring a peaceful atmosphere to the citizens of Dimapur. NCD also expressed its deepest condolence to the bereaved family members. The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), in a press release, stated that it will not remain a “mute spectator” as the killing has disturbed the peace that has been prevailing. It urged the law enforcing agencies and the district administration to arrest the perpetrators “failing which the business community will close down the transport operation in Dimapur.”
The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) demanded, through a press release, that no stone should be left unturned to arrest the perpetrators. “This incident has smeared the long peace the state has been witnessing and would like to make it clear that gun culture and killings will not be allowed to take over our society again,” it said.
