UK riots: EU monitors situation 'very closely'

Brussels, Aug 8 (UNI) The European Union is monitoring the situation in the United Kingdom "very closely" amid ongoing riots in the country as they could possibly lead to "spillovers" into the bloc, European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said on Thursday.
Far-right protesters have rallied against the influx of migrants across the country after unconfirmed reports suggested that the perpetrator in a stabbing attack in the UK city of Southport on July 29 was a refugee. The attacker was later identified as a Welsh-born boy of Rwandan descent.
"On the current situation in the UK, we cannot be naive, of course, and there could be potential spillovers into the EU. We are very well aware of this, and this is why we are following the situation [in the UK] very closely," Regnier told a briefing.
