Two militants killed in Sopore encounter, operation continues

Srinagar, Sep 13 (UNI) Two militants were killed by security forces on Thursday in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.
Authorities suspended mobile internet service in Sopore and train service in north Kashmir while educational institutions were also closed. Clashes erupted in the adjacent areas and security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators.
Col Rajesh Kalia told UNI that on a tip-off about the presence of militants troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO at Chinkipora, Sopore, early this morning. When the troops were sealing the area Sheikh Sahib Chankipora, Sopore, militants hiding there opened fire, they said, adding security forces also retaliated ensuing an encounter.
