trustea holds its first council meeting in Kolkata

Kolkata, Sep 14(UNI) trustea, the domestic Indian sustainability and verification code held its first council of member’s meeting here recently.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Rajesh Bhuyan, Director, trustea, stated, the trustea Sustainable Tea Foundation has been incorporated and will be managing the trustea Program independently.
He said trustea is focussing on IT enabled initiatives like the traceability app, web-based e- learning solution and a comprehensive database management solution trustea DBMS, to aid effective programme delivery.
On September 10 last, trustea announced announced Tea Research Association (TRA) and Action for Food Production (AFPRO) as implementer of its sustainability code across the country.
Mr Bhuyan said, "I am very happy to have on board our new implementation partners TRA, Tata Trusts and AFPRO and the expertise that they bring in, will deliver enhanced value to the process of providing handholding outreach to members enrolled in the program."
Since its inception six years ago, trustea has verified 627 million kilogram of tea cumulatively till June
2019.
Prabhat Kamal Bezbaruah,Chairman, Tea Board of India and Tea Research Association, stated, “ Being a home-grown certification program, trustea is very relevant and I feel more and more packers will join this certification body. With TRA being an implementation partner and as Chairman of TRA, I feel there is a huge amount of synergy between TRA and trustea. We hope this will be a very successful partnership."
He added:"The collaboration with all components of value chain and trustea hopefully would be one of the pivots of that collaboration. We are expanding our testing facility. Testing is one of key elements of determining sustainability of tea,"
Mr Bezbaruah said that Assam Government has given TRA a large project to improve lot of STG including 240 training programs slated for this year.
Speaking on the sidelines of the council meet one of the chief funders, Mr. Paras Desai, Executive Director, Wagh Bakri, stated, “This was our first council meeting and we have had a broad discussion. In my mind as a funder or as a person who wants to take it to the packets it’s a win win situation for all. First the consumer is getting a sustainably produced tea and Certification assures this. Buyer gets assurance. Government gets assurance that laws and rules are being followed. And consumption increases and with increase in consumption prices will also go up. So it’s a win win situation starting from producers, Small tea growers, bottling factory to auction house to a trader or packeteer and finally to retailer and consumer. We think the future of sustainable tea is very bright. We already have opened 13 tea lounges to popularise the beverage and now come to Kolkata, he added, as the company completes a century.”
Other key speakers who participated in the panel discussion were Mr. Jagjet Kandal, Managing Director, Amalgamated Plantations Pvt. Ltd.
