Trump orders creation of garden for national heroes

Trump orders creation of garden for national heroes

Washington, Jul 4 (UNI) US President Donald Trump on Saturday ordered the creation of a "National Garden of American Heroes," to defend what he called "our great national story" against those, who vandalise statues.

Giving his executive order to a new task force, Mr Trump gave them 60 days to present their plans in this regard, including a location for the garden, directing them that the new statues must be 'lifelike' and "not abstract or modernist," the BBC reported.

A number of statues, mostly slave owners or traders, have been pulled down in several cities across the US, since the police killed an unarmed black man, George Floyd, in May.

Most of the monuments targeted by the protesters are linked to the slave-owning Confederacy during the Civil War in America.

President Trump has defended the Confederate symbols as part of American heritage.

Earlier, in a speech to mark the country's Independence Day at Mount Rushmore, he condemned the anti-racism protesters, who had toppled the statues.

America's national heritage was being threatened, Mr Trump said, making an emotive appeal for patriotism.

The garden - to be in place of natural beauty near a city - is to be opened by July 4, 2026, Mr Trump's executive order said. The state authorities and civic organisations were invited to donate statues for the same.
