TRS decides to back Venkaiah Naidu for VP polls

TRS decides to back Venkaiah Naidu for VP polls

New Delhi, Jul 17 (UNI) Continuing its latent hobnobbing with the NDA leadership, the K Chandrasekhara Rao-led Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) today announced its support for the candidature of M Venkaiah Naidu for election for the Vice President's post. "Mr Naidu is a very senior Parliamentarian with vast experience. Our party has decided to support his candidature," a senior party leader said here. TRS had backed the candidature of Ram Nath Kovind, as well for the Presidential elections. On July 1, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha said her party will not have anything to do in the long run with the BJP or with the saffron party-led NDA combine as the decision to support Mr Kovind for the Presidential election was considered by the party because of his clean image and his social background. "It was certainly a conscious decision. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi called and spoke to TRS leader and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhara Rao, it was decided that we will support the candidature of Mr Kovind due to his image and also because he is a Dalit," Ms Kavitha said. TRS trying to come close to BJP could also be a game plan to upset TRS chief Mr Rao's chief opponent in 'Telugu' politics - the TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu. The TDP is already a NDA constituent but often the relations between BJP and TDP have seen hurdles especially in the context of demand for 'special category' status for Andhra Pradesh state.
