Tripura LF Chairman and veteran communist dies in Kolkata

Agartala, Jan 21 (UNI) Veteran communist leader, former member of Loksabha and Chairman of Tripura Left Front Committee Khagen Das died early morning today at Kolkata Tripura Bhawan, following a massive cardiac arrest.

He was 79 and senior member of the party in the state. Das is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Das had thousands of followers and friends apart front political circle.

The CPI-M Tripura state committee declared two days of mourning over the sudden demise of Das and postponed all political activities today and tomorrow. The schedule meeting of CPI-M state committee and left front for finalizing the candidates of upcoming assembly election has been rescheduled on Jan 23 next.

Das along with seven other top leaders of Tripura CPI-M including Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and party state secretary Bijan Dhar have been attending the crucial CPI-M Central Committee meeting at Kolkata regarding party strategy and policy for ensuing assembly election.

The CPI-M Central Committee meeting began on Jan 19 last and scheduled to be concluded today. Today’s agenda and issues of the meeting were cut short and the leaders will be accompanying the body in the evening flight to Agartala, said Bijan Dhar.

According to Dhar, Das felt ill around 3 AM in Pretoria Street Tripura Bhawan and called up others. He was immediately shifted to a private hospital, next door to Tripura Bhawan where doctors declared him dead.

“After meeting he joined us for informal discussion and dinner. At usual time he went to bed. However, in the early morning he informed us about his chest pain. All of us, immediately reached his room and called the Bhawan officials. Despite prompt action we could not save him. Doctors said he suffered severe heart attack. He had cardiac arrest twice before,” Dhar said.

Khagen Das was born in Sept 4, 1937 at Durgapur village of Comilla district of present Bangladesh. He was a post graduate in commerce from Calcutta University and served as a teacher before he joined active politics during seventies. Das was first elected to assembly in 1978.

He was a Cabinet Minister in Nripen Chakraborty’s government between 1983 and 1988. He became the Political Secretary to Chief Minister during 1993-98 and was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1998. In 2002 Loksabha by-election he was elected from West Tripura and till 2014 he was the member of Loksabha.
