Tripura lauds decision of upgradation of Akhaura – Ashuganj port road

Agartala, Jan 25 (UNI) The Tripura government has welcomed the decision of upgrading 50.58 km long road between Ashuganj river port and Akhaura land port of Bangladesh to four lane highway for smooth road connectivity with Agartala, which is believed to further boost international trade.
Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma said that in a major impetus to the Indo Bangla bilateral relations, especially for regional communication and economic development, authorities of India and Bangladesh had signed an agreement to upgrade the most important road that was held up for past many years.
The road between Ashuganj river port to Dharhar area was signed between Roads and Highways Department (RHD) of Bangladesh and an Indian Company Afcons Infrastructure Limited in presence of Bangladesh’s transport and bridge minister Obaidul Qader and Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das.
According to report, the project is part of the two billion US dollar second line of credit extended by India to Bangladesh in 2016, which would boost connectivity between Bangladesh and North-eastern states as well as will facilitate sub-regional connectivity among South and South-east Asian countries.
As per the plan, in the first phase 12.21 kms of road will be constructed from Ashuganj river port to Sarail at the cost of Rs 555.44 Cr while the maintenance cost has been calculated at Rs 19.1 Cr. In the second phase 27 kms of the highway will be constructed between Sarail and Dharhar at an estimated cost of Rs 23.36 Cr and in the last phase 11.32 km of road will be constructed between Dharhar and Akhaura.
