Tripura journalist attacked miscreants

Agartala, Jun 17 (UNI) A journalist of local TV channel was injured in an attack yesterday by some miscreants at Mungiakami area under Khowai district while covering the distressed condition of tribal habitations near Assam- Agartala national highway.
A specific complaint has been lodged against a local BJP worker identified as Prabir Devbarma but so far he has not been arrested.
However, police said an investigation has been launched against the accused and appropriate action will be taken as per law.
The victim Ajit Devbarma, a correspondent of Kokborok Cable TV channel Sairangchati, was assaulted by a group of miscreants led by one Prabir, a resident of Chakmaghat area, while he was returning after covering the demonstration of CPI (M) party.
Ajit stated that he had taken shelter in a roadside shop due to sudden rainfall where Prabir and others attacked him.
The local people rescued him and sent him to Mungiakami hospital with serious injuries.
Ajit told police that he had covered news against Prabir, a local BJP leader based on some complaints by the poor tribals.
Allegedly, Prabir was accused of taking bribe from the poor people for geo-tagging the their house under Prime Minister Awas Yojana.
The people had to pay him as the final installment under the scheme cannot be released without geo-tagging of the work, and Prabir has allegedly created obstacles in the completion of the work.
Allegedly, Prabir had threatened Ajay earlier, and attacked him yesterday when he spotted the scribe alone.
The journalist bodies including All Tripura Kokborok Media Forum have condemned the incident and demanded security for the working journalists in the state.
They also sought action against the accused persons.
As many as five such attacks were carried out allegedly by ruling party miscreants in past two years in the state but no satisfactory action was taken in any of the case.
