Tripura BJP MLA escapes narrowly from violent attack

Tripura BJP MLA escapes narrowly from violent attack

Agartala, Sept 21 (UNI) The power politics of ruling partners in Tripura – BJP and Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT) continued to hit the law and order situation of the state where police even failed to provide security to the MLAs.
In the run up to the upcoming ADC election, IPFT on one hand has been exerting pressure on BJP leadership not to contest the election and instead extend support to IPFT candidates while on the other hand IPFT workers have been putting violent blockade on BJP tribal leaders to prevent their activities in tribal areas.
The senior tribal leader of BJP and MLA Rampada Jamatia alleged that he made a narrow escape from a violent attack by a group of IPFT workers yesterday when he was in a party meeting at Ganganagar community hall of under Dhalai district. Despite repeated attempts he not was able to contact the higher ups of state police. Even the chief minister, who is in charge of the home department, did not respond to his repeated calls, he told mediapersons.
A few lathi-wielding policemen, deployed for security of the MLA, remained mute spectators and helped him to leave the meeting but he could not come out from the locality for more than two hours. Later, in the evening he lodged FIR at Gandacherra police station against some local leaders of IPFT.
However, IPFT general secretary and Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kr Jamatia condemned the incident and stated that initial investigation did not establish any link of IPFT in the incident. He also requested police to conduct impartial enquiry into the allegation and take appropriate action against the perpetrators.
“It’s a matter of concern for us. People have resorted to attack on the elected representatives mostly in the tribal areas and everytime the blame comes on IPFT. There are several issues and sentiments in tribal areas, which are not related to any party but people get irritated when they felt their sentiments are hurt or subjugated by the leaders,” Jamatia stated.
Meanwhile, Jamatia stated he had gone to the community hall at Ganganagar to address a pre-arranged meeting to make people aware of Ayushman Bharat health insurance and Ayushman Tripura schemes. After sometime, a group of IPFT workers stormed the hall and chased the audience away and got hold of Rampada.
While abusing him profusely the goons tried also to assault him but he managed to escape. Even though he was in danger of physical attack the policemen, headed by a sub-inspector, remained mute spectators and responsible persons were not receiving phone calls, he alleged adding, “I could also have been killed but the police did nothing to drive away miscreants. If this continues there will be an end to civilized politics in Tripura and the coming elections will be a farce.”
