Trans Arunachal Highway project to be completed by 2021

New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) The ambitious Trans Arunachal Highway -- a two-lane highway project connecting the strategically important town of Tawang on the India-China border in north-western Arunachal Pradesh to Kanubari in the south-eastern tip of the state is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

According to officials of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, it will be a trunk route of about 1811 km which is being developed as a two-lane National Highway and finally culminating on NH-52 near Akajan on the right side of Bogibeel Bridge near Dibrugarh in Assam.

The Highway, passing through the mid belt of Arunachal Pradesh will inter-connect 12 district headquarters of the state and provide an improved connectivity to the state capital of Itanagar.

Under the Arunachal Pradesh Package of Roads and Highways, 776 km road stretches were approved on Hybrid BOT (Annuity) basis. The government has awarded tenders for all four sub projects of 774 km at total project cost of Rs 5,111 crores.

Besides, road stretches aggregating to 1543 km have been approved for execution on cash contract basis. Out of these around 1,272 km of road length have been awarded amounting to Rs 11,586 crores.

The total sanctions accorded are for 2,047 km at a cost of Rs 20,329 crores. The entire state package of road and highways is targeted for completion by March 2027.

The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has taken a number of policies and practices to build faster stronger all weather roads, bridges and robust infrastructure.

The government has announced more than 80 new road projects for the region.

The Ministry has taken up an ambitious special Accelerated Road Development Programme (SARDP-NE) for development of road network in the NE region.

This programme envisages road connectivity to all the district headquarters in the region by minimum 2-lane highway standards apart from providing road connectivity to remote areas.
