Traffic on Kashmir highway resumes, only stranded vehicles allowed to move

Srinagar, Jan 17 (UNI) Traffic on the national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, has resumed, after remaining suspended yesterday due to heavy snowfall. However, only stranded vehicles from both sides would be allowed to move towards their respective destinations today, a traffic police official told UNI. He said traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended yesterday, following 3-5 feet snowfall at Jawahar tunnel, Banihal, Shaitan Nallah and Patnitop. There were also landslides at several places between Ramban and Ramsu. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, put into service sophisticated machines and men and put through the highway again. It was decided that no fresh vehicle will be allowed from Srinagar or Jammu till all stranded vehicles from both sides are cleared, the official said, adding that there are vehicles at Patnitop, Ramban, Ramsu, Banihal, Qazigund and other places. However, he said light vehicles will be ply from both sides and heavy vehicles wll ply from one side only, till further orders. UNI BAS RJ ADG 1021
