Tourists among 1000 still stranded in snow-covered roads of Kaza, Leh and Manali

Shimla, Sep 24 (UNI) Around thousand people including tourists and locals are stranded in the snowbound roads of Gramppu-Kaza, Manali-Keylong and Keylong-Leh roads after they trapped in an unprecedented snowfall.
Most of the stranded people were in camping sites when it started snowing in past 24 hours.
There are reports that many were stranded between Serchu and 16,500-ft-high Bara La Cha pass, between Zing Zing Bar and Deepak Tal on the Keylong -Serchu-Leh highway.
Similarly, many tourist vehicles and bikes are stranded between Gramphu and Batal on the Kaza-Grampu Manali road as there are about two to three ft. snow mounted on the road. There are reports that as many as 50 bikers and SUVs and jeep left to Leh three days back from Keylong were stranded at Serchu camps.
Taxi and Hotel associations claimed that more than 450 tourists, including foreigners, who have abandoned their vehicles on the the highway at several places due to snow and have taken shelter in camps and tents at Zing Zing Bar and Serchu.
They alleged that after the heavy snowfall, Grampu -Kaza road closed down and 80 to 90 tourists who came from Kaza in Spiti on Sunday were stranded at Grampu Batal and Chatru on the Kaza-Grampu road yet to be rescued.
Camp operators fear that if shutdown continue for a week, they may run out of food for the campers.
According to reports, around 300 tourists from West Bengal and other states, including foreigners trapped in Keylong -Sissu and Udaipur have been rescued by the locals.
Meanwhile, power, mobile and other telecommunication services are paralysed in the Lahual Spiti district.
District administration and Border Road Organization could not evacuate the stranded people due to bad weather.
The unseasonal rain and snowfall caused massive damage to ripen apple, peas, potatoes and off-season vegetables.
Though the bad weather cut off the communication of tribal districts from rest of the state, Manaly-Leh and Manali-Kaza and Keylong-Kaza road will open for vehicular traffic from April to November.
