Top LeT militant buried, clashes erupt, traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway diverted

Srinagar, Jan 12 (UNI) Clashes erupted in Zewan area of south Kashmir after top militant of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) killed in an encounter last evening, was buried today. Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was diverted between Pantha Chowk to Pampore, a traffic police official said. Sajjad Ahmad alias Peer, a resident of Zewan, was killed in an encounter by security forces at Zakoora area of the city outskirts during a search operation. Shops and business establishments in Zewan and adjoining area besides at Pantha chowk, Pampore, Kadalbal and Fristbal on the highway remained closed. Traffic was also off the road. Work in government offices, banks and other institutions was also affected. However, immediately after the slain militant was buried, some people, mostly youths raising'' pro-freedom slogans, tried to march towards the highway. However, they were stopped by the security forces and state police personnel, deployed in strength, leading to clashes. The demonstrators pelted stones on security forces, who resorted to lathicharge to disperse them. Apprehending trouble, authorities have closed the road between Pantha Chowk to Pampore. All traffic, including those going to Jammu, was diverted through Lasjan. A traffic police official said vehicles are being diverted through alternative routes to avoid Pantha chowk and Pampore areas for security reasons. UNI BAS SV RK1313
