Toll-free number to inform about abandoned vehicles: BMC

Mumbai, Dec 11 (UNI) To register complaints against abandoned or unattended vehicles on Mumbai roads, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will provide a toll-free number, E-mail ID and also a What's App number soon.
The number of vehicles plying on the streets have risen substantially, while the breadth of the roads in the city has remained constant, leading to huge traffic snarls. People often find it convenient to abandon or get rid of their old vehicles on road edges or footpaths.
Dr. Mahesh Bedekar had filed a petition seeking to take action against such abandoned vehicles in the Bombay High Court (HC).
Considering the petition, the HC has directed the civic body to take action against abandoned vehicles.
Meanwhile, the BMC has appointed an external agency which will function like a ‘call centre’ and register citizens’ complaints and pass it on to individual wards who have jurisdiction over the area.

TLC Vehicle Assist agency will set up a control room and will be responsible for taking down complaints from citizens and forwarding them to the individual ward offices. The ward office will then inspect and paste notices on the car. The agency will tow the vehicles away, if they do not hear from the vehicle owner in three
months from the notice date.
The civic-body will spend Rs 4.80 lakh on this proposal, said a civic-official.
