Ties between India, Russia remains unaffected by its growing relations with China

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Despite Russia’s growing relations with China and its recent defence deal with Pakistan, its ties with India remain unaffected, sources in the External affairs Ministry said today. Ahead of the visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to India next month, MEA sources said despite growing engagement between Russia and China in areas like trade and people to people exchanges, its commitment to improving ties with India remains unchanged. Over the last few years, the relationship between Russia and China has solidified in areas like trade and people to people exchanges. ''However, despite all the progress in Russia-China relations, its (Russia) commitment in improving relations with India remains unchanged,’’the sources said. They said the Russians were clear that their relationship with India is crucial to their Asia Pacific policy. They said the interactions between India and Russia has been growing. ''The relationship between India and Russia is one of the most dynamic relationships,’’they said. The sources also said India’s relationship with Russia in the areas of Defence and security remains unaffected by the growing Indo-US relationship. They said the challenge was to keep the relationship between India and Russia stable in times when the relationship between the major powers like Russia and the US were being ‘loosened’. The sources said it was not proper to see the India-Russia relations from the litmus test of the deal between Russia and Pakistan. ''It is not proper to read India-Russia relations on the litmus test of Pakistan. There is no comparison of military relations between India and Russia and its military deal with Pakistan. Russia’s relationship with Pakistan does not in any way reduce its military engagement with India,'' they said. While admitting that Indo-Russia ties in the area of trade and economy have been impacted by recent developments, the sources said efforts were being made to bring things ‘back on track’. ''We are trying to put our economic engagement back on track, looking at expanding trade and looking at more viable trade corridors,'' they said. They said in recent years, Russia and India have been engaging in various areas like energy cooperation, civil nuclear cooperation, infrastructure and Railways. Admitting that promoting business relations with Russia is a challenge, the sources said that many sanctions on Russia were very ‘limited’ and there were ways to work around them and do businesses that are not part of the US-Russia conflict. ''The sanctions need to be studied more carefully. We need to ensure that all the contracts with Russia are fulfilled,''' they said. At the same time, they also admitted that there was a need to ‘reinvent’ India’s relations with Russia. ''We need to move on. Russia is not the same country. The world is not the same. We need to reinvest our relationship with Russia,’’ they said. Mr Putin will arrive in India in mid-October for the five- nation BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) Summit to be held in Goa as well as annual Indo-Russia bilateral Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
