Three thousand affected in Karaikal due to severe Cyclonic Storm : CM

Puducherry, Nov 16 (UNI) As many as 3,000 people in Karaikal region in this Union Territory have been affected due to the severe Cyclonic Storm 'Gaja' which ravaged the region after crossing between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam early on Friday morning.
The affected people were accommodated in relief camps, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said.
Talking to news persons before leaving for Karaikal along with Ministers Malladi Krishna Rao and Shajahan, to supervise the relief operations being undertaken in the region, Mr Narayanasamy said the administration was prepared to meet any eventuality arsing out of Gaja.
However, there was not much damages in Puducherry except a few trees were uprooted and a woman injured in a wall collapse.
However, he said, Karaikal region was severely affected with a large number of trees being uprooted and lamp posts getting damaged. This resulted in 90 percent power outage in the region, he added.

Agriculture Minister Kamalakannan is already undertaking relief works there, he said, adding that three thousand were evacuated from low lying areas and sheltered in relief camps and are being fed.

Karaikal District Collector was asked to give a report on the damage after assessing the same, the Chief Minister said and added that the Collector, Deputy Collector and another IAS officer sent from here were on rounds throughout the night and undertaken relief works.
