Three killed, two injured in a social gathering in Tripura, two bodies recovered

Agartala, April 15 (UNI) At least three persons, including a woman, were murdered last night in Manikpur village under Longtaraivalley sub-division of Dhalai district following a quarrel during the celebration of Biju festival of Chakma tribes.
Police arrested a middle-aged man, identified as Chhabikanta Chakma in connection with the incident.
Police said the victims were identified as Subal Kanti Chakma (65), Kinachand Chakma (45) and Hemati Tripura (39). Two others – Murucherra Chakma and Gunodhar Chakma of the village were also injured in the attack and were shifted to Dhalai district hospital.
According to reports, all of them were taking part in the revelries of an amusement party organised on the occasion and were indulging in alcohol.
Allegedly, Chhabikanta suddenly got agitated and launched an indiscriminate attack with a sharp weapon over an altercation on the issue on April 18 in East Tripura parliamentary constituency.
In the attack five persons were injured seriously. By the time villagers could overpower Chhabikanta Chakma and bring the situation under control, three of the victims succumbed to their injuries, while only two could be taken to hospital for treatment.
Chhabikanta was handed over to police. The dead bodies were handed over to the family later in the afternoon today.
According to the villagers, one Jharnalu Chakma has been absconding since after the incident.
The incident has triggered tension in poll bound Dhalai district. However, police said the incident apparently resulted under the influence of liquor, but investigation has been launched into the incident and accused has been forwarded to court seeking his remand.
Meanwhile, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee alleged that the incident was a planned murder. The TPCC vice-president Tapas Dey alleged that the accused Chhabikanta is an active cadre of BJP in the area and all other victims belonged to the opposition Congress. “A person under the influence of liquor cannot chop three people and injure two more, unless it has been planned.”
He accused Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and BJP General Secretary Sunil Deodhar for the incident and stated that both the leaders have been delivering speeches in mixed populated areas in a manner that spreads communal hatred. The TPCC chief alleged that both Mr Deb and Mr Deodhar have been instigating BJP cadres against the opposition.
Congress has intimated the incident to Election Commission of India, Mr Dey informed.
Two more bodies were recovered by police today in the morning from Manu police station area of the district.
