Thirteen die every day on Punjab roads

Moga, Jul 12 (UNI) A recent report on Road Safety Analysis (RSA) revealed that on an average, 13 persons were killed every day in Punjab and a total of 4,725 persons died in road accidents in 2018.

According to a report prepared under "Tandrust Punjab Mission", there is six per cent increase in road accident fatalities and 5 per cent increase in fatal road accidents in urban areas as compared to 2017. According to the report, 20,540 persons were killed due to over speeding and 85 due to drunken driving last year. Surpassing the national average of 111, Punjab preceded 155 fatalities per million population.

Roop Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib and SAS nagar are the top three districts, respectively, where the rate of fatal road accidents is almost double the state average. The maximum number of deaths was reported between 1800 hrs and 2100 hrs. On an average, only eight traffic police personnel are deployed against per lack population in the state.

ADGP Sharad S Chuhan said, 'Steps are being taken to improve the situation. Road safety associates in ten districts will analyse every accident and identify blank spots, which will be rectified with the help of local corporations”

Five districts Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Frerozrpur and Fazilka are the safest district in the state where number of deaths are 88, 98, 106, 107 and 125 respectively.
