Kolkata, Jun 10 (UNI) Actor Soumitra Chatterjee, who is the only Indian listed among the recipients of - Légion d'Honneur- by the French government for 2017, today dedicated France's highest civilian award to the cinema goers. " I never thought of getting any such international acclaim or award while I acted in the films and this award now must a recognition for those who saw my movies," the 82-year-actor said. The French government announced that its highest civilian award - Legion d"Honnour - to be conferred on Soumitra Chatterjee later this year for his outstanding contribution in cinema and theatre. " I feel good for the award and at the same time I feel for those made me to come to this point by seeing my acting in cinemas, the actor, who is still remain busy in Tollywood, said. Soumitra Chatterjee will be the 33rd Indian and second Bengali after Satyajit Ray, who was awarded with the French government top civilian award in 1987. Interestingly, Soumitra Chatterjee had acted some 14 movies made by Oscar award winning director Satyajit Ray. Prior to Soumitra Chatterjee nominated for 2017, other those from the film and cultural fraternity in India to have received the honour are Satyajit Ray (1987), Sivaji Ganeshan (1995), Pandit Ravi Shankar (2000), Amitabh Bacchan (2007), Shahrukh Khan (2014), and Kamal Hassan (2016). As regards the Bengalis, 82-year-old Soumitra Chatterjee, is the fifth personality to have been selected for the Legion of Honour. Apart from Satyajit Ray and Ravi Shankar, Chandannagore resident late Durga Charan Rakshit (1896) and educationist Bikas Chandra Sanyal (2007) were conferred the honour. The French government representatives will arrive in this city later this year and confer the Legion of Honour on Soumitra Chatterjee. “I am feeling greatly honoured,” actor Chatterjee said reacting to the French government announcement. Benali cimena actor Soumitra Chatterjee also awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke, Padmabhusan, Sangit Natak Academy, besides many honours from the West Bengal government. UNI PC AKM
