There were middlemen in defence deals during Manmohan Singh Govt: Parrikar
New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that there were middlemen involved in defence deals during the previous UPA regime. The Defence Minister said the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to remove shady actors from the defence sector thereby saving huge money which otherwise would be spent on commissions. "I will not go to specifics, but you tell me: why was there controversies related to two or three contracts, such as Agusta Westland, during their tenure," said Mr Parrikar in an interview to the Week, adding that, the present government has removed middlemen, and that is one way "we have saved money." "We have wiped out commissions from procurements, and that is why you see that we can bring down cost of programmes in a big way," he said. The Defence Minister has talked about the middlemen in the defence deals at time when the newly released Defence Procurement Policy aimed at regularising the agents in the sector. Asked about the measures taken for saving the money, the Defence Minister said there were many ways of saving money, which are being considered. "We can get into hard negotiations, which help save money and reduce cost of acquiring weapon systems. This way, we can save at least 20 per cent in contracts," said Mr Parrikar. When pointed out about the meagre increase in this year's defence budget, he said there was not much requirement of funds for current procurements. "Almost 85 per cent of the budget is required for the committed liabilities--that means the money would be paid for acquisitions done in the past, like 2011-12 and 2012-13. Funds for acquisitions for current year would be required only in the coming two or three years," he said. UNI MK ADG 1425
