There should be mass movement if Muslims are sent to detention camps : Chidambaram

New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said that there should be mass movement if any person from Muslim community is sent to detention centres, “in case the Supreme Court upholds the validity of Citizenship Amendment Act”.

Addressing a student gathering, organised by the Congress student body NSUI, in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), over the CAA and National Register of Citizenship (NRC) and its implications in Indian society, Mr Chidamabaram said that the “CAA was an outcome of NRC fiasco in Assam”.

Responding to a question by a student that the what will be the next course of action if the apex court upheld the CAA, the former Finance Minister, who is a strong critic of CAA and NRC, said that there should be a mass movement against if any person from Muslim community is to sent detention camps.
“There should be a huge mass movement resisting any Muslim being thrown out or kept in detention camps. They (government) will touch the excluded and it will only be Muslims”, he said.
Mr Chidamabram further said that the Narendra Modi government has brought the CAA to address the concern of ‘Assam fiasco’, where 12 lakh people are from Hindu community out of 19 laksh people who could not be included in the final NRC in Assam.
Taking on the BJP, he said that the saffron party is spreading lie that the Congress and the Left parties are against to give citizenship to persecuted Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan.
“Any leader of the Congress or the Left parties said that they are against to give citizenship to persecuted minorities from Pakistan. We only demanded that it should be inclusive, not exclusive”, Mr Chidambaram added.
