Thangkhiew sworn-in as judge of Meghalaya High Court

Shillong, Nov 19 (UNI) Senior Advocate Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew on Monday was sworn-in as judge of the Meghalaya High Court.
He was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir in the court premises in presence of Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen, Chief Secretary Yeshi Tsering, senior government and lawyers.
Thangkhiew also scripted history by becoming the first tribal Khasi advocate to be sworn-in as judge of the Meghalaya High Court.
The Central Government has issued the notification of the appointment of Senior Advocate Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as judge of the Meghalaya High Court in pursuant to the Supreme Court Collegium’s resolution in September this year.
The Supreme Court Collegium had considered it fit to appoint Thangkhiew on the basis of the interaction and the material placed before it, it added.
Prior to this appointment, Thangkhiew was designated as Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in 2010. He practiced mainly civil and constitutional law.
He completed his schooling from St Edmund’s, graduated from St Edmund’s College with honours in Economics (1987) and completed his Bachelor of Legislative Law from Delhi University in 1990.
