Thane police on hunt for theft accused instead nab murder convict hiding in UP after jumping parole

Thane, Jul 12 (UNI) A team of the city police which had gone to Balia of Uttar Pradesh to nab a theft accused, instead apprehended a murder convict who had jumped parole and was in hiding in his hometown of that district.
A Crime Branch team had gone to Balia to investigate a case of theft registered under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code with the Narpoli police station.
There, during investigation, a team member got a tip-off that a murder convict Sumit Giri, who had jumped parole and an offence under section 224 of the IPC was registered against him with the Rabale police station was in hiding.
Based on that, the Crime Branch team arrested him on July 9, brought him to city on a transit remand and handed him over to the Rabale police on Thursday, police said.
Giving further details of the case, police said Giri (30) was in love with one Samata Fernandes and on March 20, 2008, they had gone to a lodge at Rable where he stabbed her to death over an issue.

He also attempted to commit suicide then by stabbing himself in the abdomen.
In connection with the crime, a court here had convicted him under sections 302 and 309 of the IPC and awarded him life sentence.
While undergoing the sentence in the Kalamb prison of Kolhapur, he was granted a parole from November 23, 2012 to December 22, 2012, but he jumped the parole and went into hiding.
Based on a complaint lodged by the Kolhapur jail, the Rable police had registered an offence under section 224 of IPC against Giri on November 13, 2013, and launched a search for him since then until his arrest, sources added.
