Texas SC halts order granting woman's abortion due to fatal fetus condition

Texas, Dec 9 (UNI) The Texas Supreme Court has paused a lower court ruling that allowed a pregnant woman whose fetus was diagnosed with a fatal condition to get an emergency abortion despite the state's strict laws against such procedures.
On Monday, the Center for Reproductive Rights filed an emergency lawsuit on behalf of the woman, Kate Cox, seeking a court-ordered abortion after her fetus was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition that usually results in miscarriage, stillbirth or death soon after birth. According to the plaintiffs, continuing the pregnancy means putting the woman "at high risk for severe complications threatening her life and future fertility." On Thursday, a Texas judge ruled that the woman could terminate her pregnancy. However, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked the Texas Supreme Court to block the order and issued a warning to hospitals against permitting the procedure.
"Without regard to the merits, the Court administratively stays the district court's December 7, 2023 order," the order issued late on Friday said.
