Hyderabad, Jan 14 (UNI) Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal virtually inaugurated the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad in Telangana from New Delhi on Tuesday, one of the key turmeric hubs in the country.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind, Spices Board of India Secretary P.Hemalatha, Ministry of Commerce Joint Secretary Kesang Yangzom Sherpa participated in the event at New Delhi.
BJP leader and turmeric farmer Palle Gangareddy has been appointed the National Chairman of the Turmeric Board for a three-year term. The Centre issued orders to this effect on Monday.
The establishment of a turmeric board has been a longstanding demand of Telangana farmers, particularly those in Nizamabad.
In October 2023, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement, the Union government officially notified the establishment of the National Turmeric Board.
Set up on the lines of the Tobacco Board, which has been regulating tobacco farming and trade in the country, the Turmeric Board will work with the Spice Board and other Government agencies to provide leadership on turmeric-related matters, augment the efforts, and develop and grow the turmeric sector.
The Board would promote research and development to develop new products and take cues from traditional knowledge of turmeric.
With turmeric exports expected to cross the $1-billion mark by 2030, the Union Government has opened the National Turmeric Board to develop and grow turmeric and turmeric products in the country.
Though it is grown in over 20 States, the key hubs are Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
