TASMAC Pongal sales hits the roof, touches nearly Rs 500 cr

Chennai, Jan 17 (UNI) Thanks to overwhelming contribution by
the tipplers, the liquor sold by the state-owned Tamil Nadu
State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) hit the roof during this Pongal
festival, with the government netting nearly Rs 500 crore
revenue across the state.
Thanks to an extended holiday that lasted almost a week till
Thursday, the Pongal festival sales was a record this year.
Taking into account the long vacation and to meet the demands
of the tipplers, the TASMAC management ensured that fresh
stocks of liquor were stored in its 3,800 outlets across the
State.
This was despite the government closing down 1,000 shops
across the state--500 each in 2016 and 2017.
TASMAC has purchased nearly 20,000 extra cases of beers from
various distilleries, besides an equal number extra cases of
hard liquor comprising Brandy, Whisky and Rum, for Pongal
festival anticipating higher growth in sales.
''This higher growth in sales is not expected. The actual
target was around Rs 400 to Rs 450 crore '', sources said.
In the four days between January 12 and 15, Rs 500 crore
(Rs 480 crore to be precise) liquor has been sold in the
State.
