Taps, water bodies freezes, Srinagar record coldest night, cold wave to continue

Srinagar, Dec 7 (UNI) Taps, drains and water bodies near banks, were frozen in summer capital, Srinagar, where people witnessed coldest night of the winter so far at minus 3.6 degree, about three notches below normal on Saturday.
Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, in Ladakh Union Territory (UT) was coldest in the region at minus 25.4 degree while it was minus 15.9 degree minimum temperature at Leh. Majority water bodies remained frozen and people were using spring water which remained warm in winter and cold in summer. Temperature at Kargil was not available, Met department spokesman said.
Besides chill weather conditions, dense fog disrupted normal activities, including surface and air traffic in the valley this morning.
Cold and dry spell will continue during the next 48 hours in the Kashmir valley due to which the mercury will witnessed further drop during the night and will near or above normal, a Met spokesman said this morning.
Very dense fog, coupled with icy cold winds, this morning badly hit normal activities, particularly traffic movement in summer capital, Srinagar, where people remained indoor due to sub zero temperature. Vehicles were plying with headlights on in a very low speed. However, visibility improved as the day progress.
He said Srinagar witnessed 0.5 notch drop in the minimum temperature against yesterday, when it was minus 3 degree. Today it was minus 3.6 degree, coldest so far , he said.
Taps, drains and water bodies, particularly near banks, were frozen in most areas, particularly in the outskirts in Srinagar. However, frozen water defreeze as the day progress.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and health resort of Pahalgam recorded minus 5.6 degree and 5.9 degree minimum temperature respectively which was over two degree below normal. Kupwara, frontier district of Kupwara recorded minus 5.2 degree which was about 3.5 notches below normal.
In south Kashmir Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, recorded minus 3.3 degree, over 2.5 degree below normal while at tourist resort of Kokernag witnessed minus 3.6 degree, about three notches below normal.
