Talks with Rani Mukherji never progressed for 'Oh My Goddess'

Mumbai, Mar 6 (UNI) The 'almost' pairing of Rani Mukherji and Akshay Kumar again got shelved after two decades, as she is no longer attached to the third installment of the popular "OMG" universe, titled "Oh My Goddess".
The development effectively curtails what might have marked the duo’s first on-screen pairing. They were once expected to appear together in the 1997 project "Mulaqat", which was eventually shelved, leaving their on-screen partnership unrealised.
According to a source, she was in talks to join "Oh My Goddess" as the lead protagonist, with Akshay continuing in the extended cameo role. The actress had heard the brief story outline and was interested, but the talks never progressed beyond that.
“Akshay and Rani share a great long-standing relationship and were genuinely excited about teaming up, but those were very early conversations,” the source told Variety India.
Known for its sharp satire on faith, belief systems, and religious institutions, the "OMG" franchise is getting a new treatment with a divine feminine twist this time. The latest instalment promises a bolder, more socially relevant narrative while preserving the franchise's signature blend of humor, commentary, and thought-provoking drama.
Amit Rai, who directed the well-received "OMG 2" starring Akshay, Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, returns to the director's chair. Vikram Malhotra's Abundantia Entertainment produces this film in association with Akshay's own banner.
With Mukerji stepping away from the film, the producers are now exploring other casting options for the female lead. Production is tentatively expected to commence between May and June 2026.
Recently, her film "Mardaani 3" topped the box office game and is currently set to appear in a cameo alongside Shah Rukh Khan in director Siddharth Anand's forthcoming action film "King", which is scheduled for a theatrical release on Christmas 2026. UNI NST SSP
