Syed Mushtaq Ali: Prithvi Shaw slams fifty on return from doping ban

Syed Mushtaq Ali: Prithvi Shaw slams fifty on return from doping ban

Mumbai, Nov 17 (UNI) Opener Prithvi Shaw made a splendid return to competitive cricket after serving a doping ban, smashing a 39-ball 63 in a match between Mumbai and Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, here on Sunday.

Shaw and Aditya Tare (82 off 48 balls) added 138 for the first wicket and helped Mumbai post a massive 206 for 5 in the Group 'D' match against Assam at the Wankhede stadium. Siddhesh Lad's too played a handy innings of 14-ball 32.

Prithvi's innings was laced with two sixes and 7 boundaries while Tare hit 12 fours and a maximum to get the innings going for the hosts.

The 20-year-old celebrated his half-century by raising his bat and signalled that his willow is doing all the talking for him.

Shaw's innings was particularly important as the BCCI selectors will be closely monitoring his performances in domestic cricket, after his suspension for failing a dope test earlier this year ended on November 15.

In reply to Mumbai's mammoth total, Assam kept losing wickets and no other batsman apart from Riyan Parag (38 off 33 balls) showed restraint.

In the end, Mumbai bowlers led by medium pacer Shivam Dube (2/3) restricted the visitors to 123 for 8 to register a 83-run win over Assam.

Dhawal Kulkarni (2/28), Dube (2/3), Shams Mulani (2/15), Shardul Thakur (1-23) and Shreyas Iyer (1-28) were the pick of bowlers for Mumbai.

Brief scores:

Mumbai 206 for 5 (Aditya Tare 82, Prithvi Shaw 63, Riyan Parag 3/30) beat Assam 123 for 8 (Riyan Parag 38, Sibsankar Roy 22, Shivam Dube 2/3) by 83 runs. Mumbai 4 points, Assam 0 points.
