Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port signs MoU with Tripura merchants association

Agartala, Feb 26 (UNI) The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port of Kolkata has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with All Tripura Merchant Association (ATMA) to facilitate transit of goods to Tripura and other Northeastern states from Haldia using Inland and Coastal Waterways via neighbouring Chittagong port in Bangladesh.
The port authority has termed it as a milestone to boost the trade between northeast and rest of India.
On behalf of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, the MoU was signed by Debashish Gupta, Traffic Manager, while Sujit Roy, General Secretary of ATMA, signed it on behalf of the association, here, last evening.
Talking to the media, ATMA officials stated that Tripura and other North-eastern states will see manifold surge in business and businessmen of the state would also be benefited with this step.
The distance between Tripura and West Bengal will be reduced greatly as the goods will come via Chittagong sea port, now.
“The goods come to Tripura from Haldia port after covering surface distance of about 1600 Km and now this distance will be cut short to only 420 km via Chittagong dock. As a result, not only the travel time of the goods will reduce but also the price of the products will decrease and additionally boost bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh,” said ATMA General Secretary Sujit Roy.
