Sweltering heat grips India, all hopes pinned on WD to bring showers

New Delhi, May 28 (UNI) As the country experienced severe heat wave conditions on Thursday, the citizens were pinning all their hopes on the Western Disturbances, which were expected to bring showers of relief, as soon as on the last day of May.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the Western Disturbances were likely to bring rainfall in major parts of the country in the next 72 hours.

The National Capital witnessed a hot day, with maximum temperature settling at 45.9 degree Celsius, five notches above the season's average. According to the Met office, there is a possibility of light rain or drizzle during the evening.

The Himalayan Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir recorded season's maximum 42.6 degree Celsius, but the Met Department predicts light to moderate rain with thunderstorm at most places of J&K and at isolated places of Ladakh region during May 30 and 31 giving respite to the scorching heat.

Mirpur in POK recorded 43 degrees followed by Muzaffarabad 38.4 degree, Gilgit 36 degrees, Skardu 31.7 degrees and Katra 31.1 degrees. Summer capital Srinagar recorded 26.4 degrees.

However, a brief spell of rain with thunderstorm at scattered places of J&K was also possible during May 28 and 29, the weather department further said.
