Suzuki working on e-bikes, says company head

Ahmedabad, Jun 11 (UNI) Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Ltd on Tuesday said that the company has started working on development of electrical bikes, but needs more clarity from the NITI Aayog on making electric vehicle model compulsory in under 150 cc two-wheeler.

Talking to newsmen here on the occasion of the Gujarat market launch of its GIXXER SF series bikes, company head Koichiro Hirao and Vice President Sales Devashish Handa said that there should be more clarity about intention of Niti Aayog on the battery run bike.

"The company's project on electric/battery run bikes was on and was in development stages, but it would very tough to implement it. We are not sure from when should it be implemented. What the government had said was merely intention. There were no formal regulations in place. It would be difficult to tell a date about when we would be able to sale the electric bikes till there was clarity on the part of the government," Mr Hirao said.

"In India of the 21 million units of bikes sold a year, around 80% were below 150 cc. So it would need a huge network with regard to setting up of charging points, battery production and other facilities for implementation of the policy. It would also increase the cost of motor cycles," he added.

Responding to a question, he said that his company was intended to increase the share of motorcycle sales in the coming years by the launch of new models.
