Students in Pune take out candle march demanding stern punishment to killers of Rohit Vemula

Pune, Jan 17 (UNI) Around hundred of students on Friday took out a candle march in memory of late PhD scholar Rohit Vemula and demanded rigorous punishment for his killers.

The candle march was carried out from Rani Laxmibai Chowk to Jangli Mahraj Road, in which students carrying candles in their hands demanded stern punishment for the killers of Rohit.
Addressing the students, Sujat Ambedkar said that even after four years since the 26-year-old PhD student’s death, the accused associated with his death are still not punished.
He said that following Rohit’s death, a controversy had raged in the country about his caste and claimed that he (Vemula) had committed suicide due to alleged torture by upper caste students.
The accused deserve the rigorous punishment, he added and asked the government to perform its duty.
The government should give stern punishment to the killers of Rohit, said another student Rohit Gaikwad.
