Strike cripples life in Kashmir on JKLF founder's death anniversary

Srinagar, Feb 11 (UNI) Life was today crippled due to a general strike, called by separatist organizations, including both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on the death anniversary of JKLF founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat. Bhat was hanged and later buried in Delhi’s Tihar jail on this day in 1984. Shops and business establishments remained closed in the summer capital, Srinagar and other outskirts and traffic was off the road. However, very less number of private cars were seen plying in the civil lines and uptown areas. However, there was no pedestrian or traffic movement in the downtown and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK), where curfew-like restrictions have been imposed since this morning to prevent any demonstration. The three-wheelers, though also less in number had a field day charging extra from passengers in the absence of any transport service as State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) buses also did not ply. Traffic police personnel, were seen relaxing. Very less number of vendors, selling vegetables, fruits and other eatables were seen in the streets in the civil lines and uptown. Work in government offices and banks besides other institutions were also badly affected as employees could not make it to their offices from the restricted downtown and SeK areas and in the absence of transport from uptown. Tuition and coaching centres have announced three day closure for security reasons as the separatists had called for strike on February 9 and on February 11, the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and Bhat respectively. Roads going to Maisuma, where the headquarter of JKLF and residence of its chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik, are located, have been closed with barbed wire at Budshah crossing, Gaw Kadal and Red cross road. Malik and three other senior leaders of the Front have already been arrested and sent to seven days remand before shifting them to Central Jail, Srinagar on February 8. The front had yesterday announced to hold demonstration in the Chowk area of the city, demanding the mortal remains of Guru and Bhat. Roads leading to nerve centre of the city also remained closed for the second day today. MORE UNI BAS SB RK1230
