Patna, Mar 21 (UNI) Bihar government today sought cooperation of people`s representatives and common people to make ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ successful as only 44.88 per cent of houses in the state had the facility of toilets.
Replying to a short notice question of JD (U) member Lesi Singh in the state Assembly, state rural development minister Shravan Kumar said that attempts should be made to bring about an attitudinal change and encourage people to construct toilets and use them. He said 4214 villages, 1240 Gram Panchayats and 32 blocks in the state had been freed from the menace of open defecation. He said that a comprehensive work plan had been prepared to free the entire state from the menace of open defecation by October next year.
Mr Kumar said the process for making any place free of open defecation was very cumbersome seeking cooperation of all people`s representatives for the purpose. He said that the cleanliness drive would not be completed fully unless people changed their attitude and added that the government was making efforts in this regard and incentives would not be paid to people for constructing toilets unless they started using them.
