SSPE parents' group seeks Govt support, urges early diagnosis and research

Hyderabad, July 14 (UNI) Calling for greater awareness, research and government support for children suffering from Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare and fatal neurological complication of measles, a parents' support group on Tuesday urged authorities to recognise the disease as a rare disorder and provide financial and medical assistance to affected families.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Resplice Autism Research Foundation, Kalpana Jagtap, Additional Collector (SRA), Thane, Maharashtra, and mother of an SSPE patient, said children with SSPE often appear completely healthy before suddenly developing memory loss, imbalance, behavioural changes and progressive neurological deterioration, eventually becoming bedridden and dependent on caregivers for every basic need.
Sharing her personal experience, she said her son, who was diagnosed in 2021, became bedridden within two months of diagnosis after having developed normally until then. She said many children lose their ability to swallow, making them vulnerable to aspiration pneumonia, which has claimed the lives of several patients.
